For
the tenth holiday season, The Episcopal Church of the Epiphany
presents an exhibit of 200 nativity scenes from around the world
from Monday, November 29, through Sunday, December 5, 2004. From
the elegant to the eccentric, the birth scenes are sculpted in
materials ranging from carved wood to volcanic ash.
In the church nave, there will be a special exhibit of nativity
scenes that highlight the differences between the birth story
as told in the Gospels of Luke and Matthew.
"Luke and Matthew are the only books in the Bible that tell
the birth story, and the accounts are quite different,"
says The Rev. E. Claiborne Jones. "Luke favored the downcast;
the shepherds (who were really the day laborers of that time)
get a lot of attention. But Matthew was more interested in tying
in to the Judaic tradition and his story has a different slant."
Each of these nativities is accompanied by scriptural quotes
and hymn texts. The rest of the birth scenes will be exhibited
in the Parish Hall, where baked goods, crafts and gifts can be
purchased.
